About BWI
BWI was created from lived experience, compassion, and a belief that every child deserves a safe place to belong.
Bineshiinh Wazison comes from the Ojibway language and translates to “Bird Nest” in English. The name reflects the story that inspired BWI and our commitment to providing safe, supportive places for children and youth with specialized needs.
BWI was inspired by a little girl affectionately nicknamed “Birdy,” whose journey through the child welfare and health-care systems showed firsthand the need for specialized, trained placements for children with complex needs.

The Story Behind BWI
BWI was inspired by a little girl affectionately nicknamed “Birdy.” Born with significant medical needs, Birdy spent much of her early childhood in hospital while waiting for a placement that could safely support her complex needs.
Her journey highlighted a gap that too many children and youth experience — needing more support than a traditional placement can provide, while still deserving the comfort, connection and belonging of a real home.
That experience became the inspiration behind Bineshiinh Wazison — “Birdy's Nest.” BWI was created with the belief that specialized care does not have to feel institutional. Children and youth can receive individualized, highly supported care while living in a warm, nurturing and home-like environment.
Birdy’s story became the beginning of BWI — and a commitment to creating the kind of place every young person deserves: a safe place to belong, people who believe in them, and support that helps them move forward.
